PALMER - The Chicopee Falls Tigers took the field at St. Joe's ballpark last night seeking their fourth consecutive championship, but it was the Ludlow Renegades, making their first ever finals appearance, who showed no first game jitters and got off to a fast start.
The Tigers sent Jaime Gouin to the mound to face his former team in game one under the lights. Lee Zuber led off the game and lined a 1-2 pitch to left. Zuber moved to second on an error and advanced to third on an errant pick-off attempt. Adam Parisien brought Zuber home on a sacrifice fly, which was quickly followed by Josh Gosselin's home run to right field for a 2-0 lead. Matt Salvador came up next and singled, but Gouin was able to retire the next two batters. He settled down and gave up only one hit over the next four innings, keeping the Tigers within striking distance.
After trading scoreless innings through the fourth, the Tigers came roaring back to take the lead with four runs in the fifth inning. Dylan Courtney led off the inning hitting a high fly ball to short right field that fell between the right fielder and second baseman. Courtney hustled out of the box and turned the play into a double. Jared Lamontagne and Kevin Czabaj followed with consecutive walks to load the bases, and Courtney scored on a passed ball, which also advanced the other runners. Scott Leecock then took a 1-1 pitch back up the middle to score two runs and give Chicopee the lead. Leecock then stole second and moved to third on another passed ball, where he took Ludlow's Matt Collins by surprise. Collins, pitching from the wind-up, could not deliver the ball home in time as Leecock slid in head-first to steal home for a 4-2 Chicopee lead.
The tigers went to hard throwing lefty Bobby Foley to face Gosselin to lead off the sixth. Gosselin went down swinging and Foley followed with another K and a ground ball out to end the inning. The Tigers failed to score in the bottom half of the inning and moved on to the seventh hoping to hold their lead.
The resilient Renegades refused to go quietly against Foley in the top of the seventh, however. Chris Havlak led off with a solid single and was pulled for a pinch runner, who promptly stole second. Jim Goulet struck out and Pete Leonczyk singled to drive in the run, making it a 4-3 Tigers lead. Foley induced a slow roller to second that was thrown away, setting up second and third with one out. A walk loaded the bases and it was Josh Gosselin again, this time lining a base hit to give Ludlow a 5-4 lead.
Chicopee's Andre Conde then came on to strike out the next two batters he faced, limiting further damage by Ludlow and holding them to a one-run lead. The Tigers were able to scratch across the tying run in the seventh to set the table for a thrilling extra-innings affair. Conde came on strong again in the eighth, striking out the side for five strikeouts on the night.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Tigers got a one-out hit from DH Courtney, who roped his second hit of the game and later stole second. Jared Lamontagne walked and Ludlow opted to intentionally walk Kevin Czabaj to load the bases with one out. The move appeared to work when Ludlow pitcher Matt Collins, who battled the entire game, got Leecock to hit a grounder to Lee Zuber at second base. Zuber fired home to get Courtney and inspire hopes of another inning. Tigers leadoff man Ben Benton had other ideas, however, hitting a tough hopper between third and short and beating out the throw from SS Gosselin and earning the game-winning RBI in the process.
Matt Collins took the loss despite going the distance and keeping the Tigers hitters off balance by mixing his pitches well, allowing seven hits. Josh Gosselin went 2-4 with a home run and 3 RBI while playing well at shortstop. Dylan Courtney was the only Tiger with 2 hits. Jaime Gouin went 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while striking out 3. Andre Conde picked up the win, striking out each of the 5 batters he faced.
Game 2 will be held Thursday, July 29 at Holyoke Community College. Game time is 5:45 p.m.
